Assassin bug eggs (Zelus)

This was one of several egg cases on an old willow tree near the Ottawa River. I have been checking it every so often, but missed the sight of the little bugs emerging. Here, the egg case is now empty and you can see how the minuscule insects popped off the tops of each individual egg in the case, which itself measures perhaps a couple of mm across, so you can imagine how tiny each egg was! Assasin bugs are a gardener's friend, ignoring plants, but munching on aphids and other insects.
