Mourning Cloak butterfly eggs (Nymphalis antiopa)

Mourning cloaks lay dozens and dozens of eggs around a single slender twig as here. These eggs have all hatched, and nearby is a great tangled mass of caterpillars. They could look like tent caterpillars to someone who is unfamiliar with the butterfly larvae, which is too bad, as they could easily be destroyed by some well-meaning person. An adult butterfly is shown lower right, and a mature larva is in the inset upper left.

Your knowledge never ceases to amaze me!! I hope you have a nature book in the works or perhaps you have already been published. Your photos are fascinating!
