Caddisfly larval case

Larose Forest

In spring, these caddisfly larval cases are fairly common in water bodies. This one was in a temporary pool alongside a forest road. Inside is the caterpillar-like larva. This is only one type of larval case. Depending on species, other types of cases are made. Or none. Or instead, a web is spread underwater to catch food.

What an intricate and protective case for the larva. Super capture. V.
