Sawfly cocoon

This is a relatively large cocoon, and is likely that of the Elm Sawfly, an impressively large sawfly http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/106079624). Notice how the top of the cocoon is neatly sawed open! Found in Larose Forest.

So the fly saws off the top of its own cocoon? Interesting find and capture. V.
