Elm sawfly larva (Cimbex americanus)

Photographed this today in Larose Forest. It is the huge larva of the Elm Sawfly, a large insect in the Hymenoptera order. I have long wanted to see this larva, and had pretty well given up hope that I ever would. But after years of looking, there it was, near the car at the end of a long day in the forest! For a look at the impressive adult: http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/106079624

Typically, these larvae are white or greenish, but I was really lucky and found the pink form!
