For my first entry I've chosen a haiku by Buson, born 1716, died 1783. I would imagine his name is almost as familiar as that of Issa and Basho, two of the most famous of all haiku poets (and my two favourites, I must admit). Autumn featured strongly in haiku, pervaded often by a sense of melancholy. I often have thought this is because the season, while beautiful, signals also death, the death of summer, death of vegetation, so... death in beauty, or beauty in death. I don't know who did this translation, but it has the flavour of the superb translations done by R.H. Blyth
