This is a relatively large beetle at about 18-20 mm, and is very common and easily recognized. If you peer underneath dead creatures, such as mice, or shrews, or squirrels, etc. you are bound to see these beetles scurrying away - though you might wonder why you would be peering under dead animals in the first place! Well, scat and carrion are good places to look for insects you might not otherwise find :-) In the case of this one, however, it was perched on a leaf.
