Pelecinus polyturator wasp, female

Found this near the Mer Bleue conservation area. This was about 45 mm in length, but I have seen them up to about 70 mm long. These wasps are completely HARMLESS! What looks like a stinger is really the female's ovipositor. They are parasitoids of June beetle larvae which are the grubs that eat the roots of your lawn (so they are a very good thing to have around your garden as they will help control these larvae). They are a lovely shiny black, looking almost navy blue in certain lights. The male is tiny and almost never seen.

It's a very tiny wasp so I doubt I would be afraid and especially not now that I know more about it. That ovipositor is very large. Super capture. V.
