American lady (Vanessa virginiensis)

Another of the migratory butterflies that have appeared in this area recently. Not as many of this species as the related red admirals which streamed north into Canada by the thousands. This butterfly was photographed at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden in Ottawa, sitting on some newly emerged pearly everlasting, which is the larval host plant for this species.
