Speckled alder "cone" or catkin (Alnus incana)

Alder are common shrubs alongside wetlands as they prefer damp (and sunny) sites. You may have noticed they have long pendulous catkins growing together with the above seed catkin. The long catkins produce pollen, the smaller 'cones' as here, produce the seeds. In this photo, taken a week ago, the catkin has opened and all the seeds have dispersed.
