In the previous photo, I showed the seed catkins of the alder, after the seeds had dispersed. These are the pollen catkins in their winter condition. Once spring comes, these catkins will grow considerably longer, perhaps as much as three times the size here. Flowers will open and pollen will be wind-dispersed.
