Io moth caterpillar (Automeris io), #7746

Chaffey's Locks

This large caterpillar turns into a large, spectacular moth with two huge "eyes" (patterns) on is underwings which it flashes at predators to scare them off. The spines on this caterpillar can deliver a very, very nasty sting.

WOW, quelle chenille fantastique avec ses piquants si bien disposer. Elle est superbe.

I wonder how effective those spines are as defense for this rather helpless, juicy and obvious caterpillar, and indeed whether they're hard or soft. Enjoyed the detail and colours in this image.

The spines look substantial. They must come in handy when you are in this transition. Where did you say I should paint the big eyes? BV
