These fireflies can be found, as their name suggests, in wintertime, often on maple trees. This one was on a large maple snag (standing dead tree). This is not a fly, despite it's common name of firefly. Nor is it a bug, in spite of its other common name of lightning bug. Instead, it is a beetle (Order Coleoptera). Common names can be VERY misleading sometimes! This firefly species does not emit light the way most other firefly species do.
