This wasp is scraping bits of wood off the post to convert to "paper" for nest-building. A time consuming and laborious effort.

The wooden ends of my hammock attract paper wasps like this and I think it is neat because, for years, I have been lounging around reading books or daydreaming with paper wasps inches from my head, close enough that I can hear them scraping away at the wood, and not once have the wasps bothered me. It is as if we have a mutual understanding.
