Bumblebee queens are looking for a safe place to start their colony. Once this has been achieved, the queen must get busy provisioning it with pollen. She lays her eggs on the pollen balls and then broods them, just as a bird does. Eventually her colony will be established and all summer the bees will be busy. Meanwhile the now old queen will die. When days shorten and nights get frosty, the colony will all die too, save for the new young queen who will survive to hibernate the winter away until spring returns and she can, in her turn, start a colony anew.
