A day with a camera in a part of the world I hadn't been in for about forty years. An advantage of being real old was that I couldn't remember the original visit at all, so it was a brand new experience.
There was a refinery at Glen Davis, producing petrol and other products from shale, and a town laid out like a mini-Canberra. But it cost twice as much to make petrol from shale as it did to import it, and the whole industry was shut down in 1952. The ruins are interesting, and worth the long walk to see them, but not exactly picturesque. The drive in is the best bit.
