On January 20, 1907, Buffalo was hit by a great winter storm, which brought 87 mph winds. Twenty-three lake freighters were anchored and wintering behind the breakwall, which was breached, and five vessels were grounded, including the two pictured ships, the Hurlburt W. Smith and the Nottingham. In the Buffalo area, three people were killed by falling buildings, and a fourth drowned.
