As a young boy growing up in the 50's in Buffalo, I was aware of the new music, called "race music" by polite society, played by "The Hound." It eventually became known as Rock and Roll, and nobody rocked harder than "The Hound". He made sure that when I heard covers by white artists, that I knew the original versions by black artists, that were always grittier, harder rocking, and more intense. I listened to him on WKBW. If I recall correctly, he eventually founded WBLK, and died way too early.
