Lincoln Coin & Stamps

To me, coin and stamp collecting are vestiges of gentler times. I went in here , just to see, and it was a fascinating place with a friendly and helpful staff. If I recall correctly, this company is a descendant of the Saturn Stamp Company, which used to be located on Main St.

My dad and I were regular customers of the Saturn Stamp Company, which sometime in the 1960s (if I remember correctly) moved around the corner from Main to West Tupper and became Lincoln Coins-Stamps. Saturn was founded in the 1940s by Joe Montesano, a former postal worker and stamp collector. He and my dad were members of the Buffalo Stamp Club in the 1960s. When I was a kid in the 1950s and 1960s, my pals and I would often visit the penny stamp box at Saturn and add to our growing stamp collections. Later, I became a more serious stamp collector and bought material for my collection through Lincoln's auctions. Lincoln is now run by Joe's son Lou (or it was eleven years ago [1996], when I was last in Buffalo and visited the store). If you ever go by the Lincoln store, stop in and tell Lou I said hello. He'll remember me, perhaps with a little prompting.

One of Joe Montesano's co-workers at the post office was Larry Manno, who founded Frontier Stamps, a little stamp shop located in a second-story walkup on Court Street. They used to sort mail together. My dad and I were good customers of Larry as well. He was still there eleven years ago, but I have the feeling he's no longer with us (hope I'm wrong). I learned so much about stamp collecting from Larry, Joe, and the Buffalo Stamp Club members, eventually becoming a member of the American Philatelic Society and serving two terms in the 1980s as president of the San Diego Stamp Club. But I sold off my collection (a pretty formidable assemblage of scores of albums and stockbooks of US, France, Poland, Russia, and many other countries, parts of which were inherited from my dad and my uncle) several years ago and am no longer active in the hobby.
