Rosie's

486 Elmwood Ave, Buffalo

I knew it back in the eighties as Rosie's, when Stan Szelest and his group the Ravens held down Saturday nights. I can remember Stan rockin' the house, exhorting everyone to "drink up, it's Saturday night, there ain't many left!" And he was right, Rosie's became Faherty's, it was remodeled and modernized, and it just wasn't the same. Somehow I think that was the intention.

After Rosie’s was remodeled and became Henry Orients restaurant, They discouraged their old customers and it was not successful. Same owner as Rosie’s....Helen Morton.

Played a lot of pool there in the early 90's. Even went there after I bought my first wife her engagement ring. At least the bar is still there..lol

i'm on death row in San Quentin and Stan and the Ravens put me here. I used to see him and his band in 1964-65 and sometimes Ronnie Hawkins and his Hawks (guys down from Canada who later were renamed "The Band"; which I later saw at Kleinhans Music Hall in 1969) played around town. Over on Lake Michigan, Jim Osterberg and his friends Scott and Ron Asheton were starting to shoot heroin and would later form the band Iggy and the Stooges in 1969. I just saw them in San Francisco and you can read my review of that concert by googling my name: Joe Kempkes.

Rosie's was another place we would stop by in my underage and early legal drinking years. I always liked it, but I wasn't ever really a regular.

I worked at Rosie's in the late 1970's. It really was a great place filled with an eclectic and fun clientele. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights were always fun to work. The bar was packed and they had the most incredible jukebox. I wish I had those vinyls now. No Name was my other favorite Elmwood place to hang out and play backgammon on a cold, wintry day. Hey Tara!!
