1959 was the first year of the 389, the engine that put Pontiac on the performance map, and arguably the engine that started the muscle car years, being the GTO engine.
This first year engine is the two-barrel version, rated at 215 HP. Other 1959 options were four barrels rated at 235, 283, 303, and 333 HP; and three, three two barrels rated at 318, 348, and 363 HP. The 389 was in production through 1966.
I am suspicious of this engine's air filter housing, it looks like a later year model.
