During the Kangxi period, overglaze blue and black enamels were invented thus obviating
the use of underglaze blu in wucai. Gold was also used to enrich the palette of overglaze
decoration. In the Kangxi period, wucai wares were not restricted to white backgrounds.
Instead, colour enamels were often applied on wares of various colour backgrounds.
Among al wucai wares, the most noted were wucai enamels on a coral red background
produced by the imperial kiln. The most common motifs were flowers and children at play.
Wucai wares produced in folk kilns have a wider range of subjects, often containing scenes
from operas and novels. On these wares, black enamel is used to form an outline while
other colour enamels are used to fill the flat areas.
