these are (Inca) Queros.
Without achieving the sculptural plasticity of the northern coastal cultures,
the Incas reached a considerable level of excellence in the work of stylized
bulk images, above all in those crafted in polychrome woodwork.
Traditionally denominated “quero” (kero), these ritual cup-like vases were
used in ceremonies and festivities of great importance and produced by a
specialized guild of artists. Many of these date from the historical period
known as “transition”, which corresponds to a time when already the
European presence in Peru and, concretely in Cusco, was upsetting the
symbolic order of the Andean universe, and objects such as the Queros,
were losing their mythical significance and identity..
The words (above) are from the notes titled “Queros”, which are
on display at “Museo de Arte Precolombino”, Cusco, Peru.
