I took exactly the same photo of a homeless man in New York City...

Maybe he's home less because "you're" an idiot Ike Yonoklast!!!
Don't I know you?
Oh yeah, you're every bigot I've ever met.
And by the way, you're not getting $2.00 from me.
You're not worth it!

So easy for people to be cynical of this kind of reportage, myself included. We never like what we see when the parts of society that are falling apart are laid bare before our eyes. It doesn't bode well that the rich nations of the world all have people on the side lines living horrendous lives and being ignored - so much for their freedoms we're all so passionate about. The person below would rather demonise them, than show a little compassion.

At the same time, what has irritated me about work like this in the past is that you felt the story was being told for the photography sake rather than the story. I.E. it is a story that needs to be told and photography is a good and powerful medium to tell it, as long as it is to promote the story and not just to take nice powerful photos..

Hope that makes sense..

Very Creative (on the peddler's part). To Ike ... my guess is that he's gotten quite a handful of $2s with this sign. And I'm guessing that most of those that did hand him money ... didn't tell him off. And ... I'm guessing that fewer people "tell him off" when he is holding this sign (whether or not they give him money). Very ingeneous. Kind of capitalistic in its own way ...

I give him an "A" for innovation.

Maybe this guy is homeless because he is an idiot?
I can tell him off all I want for Free .

I'd sure like to see him try to sue me for the $2.00.
Maybe he is trying to get three hots and a cot for not charging Sales Tax.
