What always strikes me about these beautiful portraits of yours, beyond the obvious look of despair in their eyes, are the bars. The bars remind me that whether these places are called a zoo, refuge, or wildlife sanctuary, they are still prisons for these creatures. It is a shameful legacy we have created; that we now must lock up many of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom in order to save them from possible extinction due to the encroachment of civilization upon their natural habitats. {voted}

This wonderful primate series put new meaning into a favorite line from poem for me. By Robert Burns, the poem was written in a Scots dialect, but loosely reverted to contemporary English it goes, "What a give the Lord could give us, to see ourselves as others see us."

As I perceive "person-ness' in the faces of these animals, it occurs to me that maybe we have been given the gift. We just don't want it. It tugs at the heart to see this chimp leaning against the bars that confine him. He seems resigned to his fate, but how can we be?
