Well thanks to Phil I know why I like the clouds so much in this image :) There is a depth and energy to them that makes you want to stare into the image forever. Beautifully done.

It is interesting how this sky that would be hard to handle with a telephoto lens is really amazing using a wide angle. The balance between ground and sky is very good, and the low point of view is well chosen.

Phil, I'm pleased to see you mention your instructional gallery on cloudshttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/clouds in your comment. Before posting this, I reviewed that gallery very studiously, to help me choose an expressive cloudscape from the many images I shot. I'm happy that I succeeded - when you're in the midst of stunning skies such as this, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the beauty alone.

It is not the sky that is beautiful, it is the relationship and symbolic shapes of the clouds within the sky, and their proximity and relationship to the ground that makes this image so striking. As I point out in my instructional gallery on clouds, the most important consideration when shooting cloudscapes is not their mere appearance, but rather their meaning. In this case, the cloudscape suggests the swirling energy of the winds that toss them about the sky so randomly. There are three layers of clouds within this image. The base layer consists of small cumulous clouds that move across the shadowy earth from left to right like a train, unmindful of the whirling exploding smears of white just above them. The image is completed by a thin layer of clouds that extends on through the top of the image, a mirror opposite of the black shadow on the earth below. When we look into the entire image, we see the randomness, as well as unity, of nature at work.

Great sky, which smartly your composition gives preference to! Terrific depth too.

What a beautiful sky Jenene. When I was a child I often used to look in awe at the sky and imagine what the shapes were all about.
