Further erosion of this area is not very evident, but farther east in this area large stands of bald cypress are dying because of salt water intrusion. Soil subsidence at the rate of 1/2" a year and a number of tropical storms and hurricanes have contributed to the destruction. The little bit of land area on the left should have green vegetation at this time of year, but the storm surge from Hurricane Katrina and abnormally high tides from Hurricane Rita drove salt water over the land area, killing grass and small scrub.
