Having grown up in Brooklyn, in a predominantly Catholic neighbourhood, and himself raised a strict Roman Catholic, Serrano is one of most famous contemporary photographers dealing with themes of religion and the sacred.
The Holy Works series is an attempt to create new religious portrait and a reinterpretation of iconic religious paintings.
The models were recruited from among the artist's friends, primarily for the diversity of their appearance, to convey New York's multicultural character.
