Warsaw Nike - "To heroes of Warsaw 1939 - 1945". The giant cast iron statue of Nike, Greek goddess who personifies victory, used as a symbol of fighting city (defence: September 1939, Warsaw uprising: August 1944).
Standing with sword and shield raised aloft, this noble structure remembers the thousands of locals who fought and died against nazi rule.
It is a work of Marian Konieczny, unveiled in July 1964. Initially placed on Theatre Square in front of the Opera Theatre (on a place of a destroyed Jablonowskich Palace), but it was moved to its current place, near W-Z road, when Jablonowskich Palace was rebuilt in 1997.
