A Panamax ship entering the inner harbour, Lyttelton, New Zealand

view map

This class of ship is so called as they are built to the maximum width for transiting the Panama Canal. This one is 225 metres long which is a common length for bulk carriers built to this specification. Here they only come into the inner harbour to take on fuel oil. The oil berth is immediately to the left of the entrance just beyond those trees and these ships overhang it at both ends.
