Bangkok, called "Krung Thep" in Thai, meaning City of Angels, was established in 1782 when King Rama I moved the capital to the east side of the Chao Phraya River, thereby using the river as a natural line of defense against the ever-threatening Burmese. Bangkok began as a small village with canals instead of streets. Today it is a thriving metropolis of approximately nine million people.
