Battlefield

The decisive battle of the 1870 war with Germany was fought over this land and the surrounding fields. Under the trees to the left there is a German war memorial, one of many in the area. In the background is the village of Gunstett. The battle began to the left of the picture, down in the valley: German cavalry took their horses down to the river opposite a company of French artillery, who opened fire.

22,000 men were killed in 10 hours. Germany won.

Interesting shot. However when there is a military cemetery nearby those places make me shiver.
Thinking about last Saturday when we saw D-Day ceremony at Colleville on tv.

Sad that such beautiful scenery has such a cause for remembrance

A lovely image of a memorable place. Looks like a photo you'd see in a storybook to me. . . not sure why. :)
