OK, what caused this?

The inside of our front gate after a hard frost. This view covers about 90cm (around 35") top to bottom.

So what caused the lines?

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3
1/30s f/3.3 at 4.6mm iso100 full exif

My guess is that the lines are either minute scratches in the wood, or possibly the chemical trail left by an insect, snail or worm??
