That was one of the reasons I took it, Steve. I misread the date as 1603, which is the year Elizabeth I died and was succeeded by James I. There are much older monuments around here, but that a single stone could remain in place for so long struck me as rather wonderful. Then half a mile up the same road I passed another one.
