Grillwork panorama, Bastrop, TX
I was setting in the Archivist office at the Bastrop Historical Society Museum comparing notes of photos I needed to take for a video project for the museum. When Carol, the Archivist handed me her list, it had on it, “grillwork.” I asked, where and what is that?
“It’s cutouts on a large sheet of metal on Chestnut Street, covering almost a half block. It's in the block just before Main St., showing the development of Bastrop from the beginning to modern times”
Really? I’ve driven by there at least 20 times and I’ve never noticed it. At that point the Archivist’s very nice and friendly assistant came over and showed me a small iPhone photo that showed about a one foot section of the grillwork she had taken from the alley. Oh, I see. Looking inside out towards the street one can see the cutouts. But, from the street view, looking outside in, they don’t show up well. Why? Because the wall behind the grillwork is a dark brown brick wall.
When I left the Archivist’s office I drove the one block to the grillwork to check it out. Here’s what I found. There is a four to five foot space between the grillwork and wall. I went into that space and, Bingo! Looking inside out, I could clearly see the cutouts. But with such a small distance between the wall and grillwork, and with the grillwork almost a half block long, there was no way to include it in one normal photo.
The only solution I could think of was to try a panorama with my iPhone pro. The result is the photo above. I was pleased with how it turned out.
