A new bridge replaced the old bridge in the 1090's. Now the old bridge is for pedestrians only, and has become rather famous because of the "Spitting Off The Bride Society," created in Bastrop. Taken from Opie and the Andy Griffin show when Opie asked his hard to entertain visiting female cousin, "Do you want to go spit off the bridge? and she accepted!! There have been "group spits," and I know other pedestrians do it too.
