Bycatch, The price of a fish on our plate.

Taiaroa Head Albatross Centre

This Albatross died after being caught by a long-liner fishing trawler.
One of an estimated 100,000 a year to die this way.
Of the 21 recognised Albatross species, 19 are on the endangered list.
Techniques have been developed to mitigate this slaughter, but some countries
still refuse to implement them.

Someday it will be man's turn, it's either coming from the stars, or from under out boots.

I agree with David, it is so bad.... I first though he was alive... poor creature

astonishing impact-laden image of the disheartening and needless demise of this mighty bird...and as you suggest many others met the same fate...clearly fish harvesting methods must be revisited and greatly improved..

Unfortunately things will not change until there is an emotional response to this. Too many of us are far removed from seeing and knowing what actually goes on. It is photos such as this that will bring it to our attention and make us act responsibly!

Sad indeed.
But a wonderful picture.

Oh, I hate to see them caught in nets and getting hooked. Maybe someone will take it out for him so he can go on his way. The image made me sad.

Effects the whole food chain.

Yes, it looks like we are going to hunt so many wonderful creatures to death, even if we don't eat them,
A very moving image.

Yikes! 100,000??? That's a whole load of birds! Walter's right, the effects on other ecosystems and species must be understood too
Gerhard Ritsema21-Sep-2009 20:38

Powerful image. What is little known is what effects it has on other species when these albatross die out.
Stephanie21-Sep-2009 19:32

John this is a sad photo, but none the less it has a story that must be told.We visited Taiarao Head two years ago and was overwhelmed by these stunning birds.
