I was number 74, (Foretop Port) and (Petty Officer, gymnastics team, Swimming team, Racing Boats Crew) and left the Ari in July 1951, joined Castle line MN but bad eyesight limited my prospects so I came ashore. Studied to become a Professional Engineer but got grabbed by the Army for National Service in 1956/1958 (became an instructor Royal Signals 1TR) which interrupted my civilian career. My time on the Ari set me up for my character and actions in later life (Youth Club Leader, Councillor, Teacher, manager etc. I am still fit at 85, and pleased to have had the Ari experience.

Belated I know, but that's the first time I've seen an entry from someone who was on the Arethusa the same time as myself.. I was number 40, Top Port 1959-61. Joined the RN Msy 1st 61. The Whizz taught me well. Joine as a Seaman TAS but pretty soon realized that scrubbing decks and painting wasn't my forte so transferred to the Fleet Air Arm and spent nearly 30yrs flying. No regrets.
However, I did join the Arethusa Old Boys Association. Still pay the annual subs but it been a few years since I've received any bumf. Is it still going?

My dad Arthur Gray was aboard The Arethusa in 1928 approximately.I am not sure how long he spent on her as I understand there is a 100 year limit before I can access more info? If this is not the case I would love to find out more about his time served on her.....any suggestions?

This brings back a few memories,On the left you can see the gangway where we use to get weekend to go ashore to Strood. At the front of her you can just see the lady on the bow.

She didn't look much diferent in 1959/63. Great picture. Thanks for bringing back some old memories, 105 Des Hoskin. Top Starboard division. Anyone remember me and want to get in touch, feel free. PHEONIX1947@aol.com Would be nice to hear from some from 1961 to 1963 in particular. Does anyone know if there is a replacement TS Arethusa at Upnor?

And I thought the U.S. Navy was outdated.
Kidding.
Nice photo and memory.
