Hi I came aboard Arethusa in 1963 as a 3 year old to receive my fathers commissioning sword from Admiral McKenzie. My father,Tudor Davies, earned the sword having received his commission but was killed in an accident early in 1963 before he could receive his award. I wonder if anyone remembers the event.

im an old arry boy 1965-1967 when ijoined hms ganges, had a great time , not all roses but made it through and never regretted it one bit. my number on the arry was 39 and i ended up a leading hand. i had some great friends but over time lost contact, and as the years roll by the memory fades. to all ex arry boys i say good luck and take care.

Hi, Twins Johnson 191/194, we were on 'Arrey' 52/-54. The powers that be used to put us up against each other, especially when in the whalers, my life would've been totally different if it hadn't been for Arethusa. I have sadly lost my brother now. Memories are still clear and very vivid of happy times.

If you go on "youtube" and print "peking leaving south sea port New York" you can find video's and photo's of the old girl leaving the harbour heading for dry-docks on Staten Island, where she will get ready for her last trip to hamburg in Germany in the spring of 2017.I was in New York 14 days ago but they had removed the gangplank the week before, so i could not board her.She did not look to pretty, but i am sure she will look magnificent when they have fully restored her to her former glory in Hamburg.To all arethusa old boys hope life has been good to you all, take care, Ted Farr (now Mcbride)

My email mailquentin@aol.com the Arethusa was a great positive influence on my life,I trained on her from 1956 with a great bunch of lads who like me I’m sure,have a lot to thank her and her Officers for it was good grounding for the RN. The most memorable officers I remember where the “WIZZ” a some what large fella by the name of Fuller, he smoked about 2 packets fags a day but at least he know his seamanship also had PT officer the name of ‘Shacks’ he he tough me how to box, The other officers were very mediocre and Farrington always at odds with Le Mare The ship itself was great but I didn't enjoy climbing the fore mast never worked up the courage to make the last Jacobs Ladder,

I Gents, I was on the Arry, number 155 top starboard, run away once, but did go back, James Avery was my mate in crime. What a mistake that was. Ended up joining the navy, Triumph leopard, boats, onyx Olympus and Churchill. Would love to come to a reunion.

My father, JEFFREY MOCK, was sent to Aretjus in the early 1960's. He made a very special friend in that time and sadly they lost contact and he's never been able to find him

just looking for some information if possible.
my uncle was on the Arethusa late 50's early 60's
his name was Ronnie Carrington.
the main reason i write is , my mother still has his uniform etc and is panicking that she will get in trouble for not returning it when he was killed in the 60's, ( i don't think she could bear to part with it at the time, but now she is well into her 90's has memories rather than physical objects.
also if there would be any pictures of him anywhere, as she only has a few grainy ones

I was aboard Arethusa 59/60,was chief petty officer cadet and busted down to leading ans back up to petty officer.I was sadly "mistaken" some times --------?Why I am writing is to tell anyone who might have ideas about visiting PEKING in Manhatten,New York to forget it.Who ever brought it to the States has just let it fall apart.I live in Canada and few years ago proudly took wife and kids to show them the boat I was on.I was show shocked at the condition of her,I shouted at various people but I guess they fought I was idiot Englishman.Last I heard was she was being sold back to Germany and then that had fallen through.Regards to anyone who knew me.

I was leading hand on 14 mess, my no was 114 Stewart Melrose one of two Scots boys on board 1960-62, Last night I was standing in a hotel in Port Appin Argyll(where I live)
and I heard a woman mention the Arethusa, to cut a long story short, her husband Martin Strutton also a TOP PORT boy of 16 mess served on board around 67-69,They have just left my home after a few hours of talking about Nozzers, Slickies, and Bloods, he's the first
"ARE" boy I've met in nearly 60 years, anyone care to talk? or better still does any one remember me..........I'm ashamed to say I stole a ships whaler and "Done a Bunk"along with Ginger from Liverpool? and had to leave, However I have done very well for myself in industry, and have no doubt it was all down to my time on the Arethusa.

My name is Mike Ritson ('Shadrack') and I was on the Arethusa 1954/5 - Ship's Book No. 212 - Quarterdeck Port. Commander Le Mare was skipper and I would not have missed the experience for anything. I then joined the RN at HMS St Vincent and then as a Lecky at HMS Collingwood. First ship was HMS Palladin (Have gun will travel) followed by HMS Cavalier and a couple of years travelling the Far East - fantastic! Came out 1963 after an accident. Sorry I cannot socialise at the moment - just been diagnosed with the Big C and I've been told treatment is going to be a long job! Best wishes to ALL.

It's really good to check out all the familier names here and the pix up top are just the business. I wonder what happened to the 'ships bell'....that was and still is precious. Anyone know ? I was Christened on HMS Vanguard, and apparantly (Coz of my Dad) our name is on that somewhere. I've tried looking for it(the bell that is)but that too is a mystery....
Can anyone throw any light on what happens to the bell after all... is there a list,or a an office somewhere that keeps these kind of records ?
I remember the many times I had to clean the ships bell with a swab of duraglit...I think it was a mild and light form of dicipline...

Hi all , I intend to arrange a get-together in mid December or mid January , I know the official reunion has just been held but a mate attended and said there was no-one there from our era . Pedro here again in my last blog dated the 20th of August I stated that this years Arethusa in upnor kent was its 25TH reunion, I must apologize for giving misleading information it was in fact its 24th reunion. Next year 2015 with be the 25TH reunion the first Saturday in September.I was at this years reunion yesterday the 6th of September and met a couple of chaps from the years that I was on the Arethusa 63/66. It was a very nice day and I really enjoyed the whole advent and looking to next years reunion the 25th in total.

My Uncle Raymond Joseph Johnson was on the Arethusa before the war.He was the "Button Boy" that had to go to the top of the mast.He subsequently served as a Chief Petty officer on th " Clarkia " and other ships.He emigrated to Australia after he married an Aussie girl.He joined the Australian Navy and served for quite a while.We still have a statue of a woman and a hound which he Christened Arethusa.I had a complete Naval uniform when I was 5-7 years old with the "Arethusa" hat band etc.

Hi, this is the first time I have posted on any site Arethusa related. I am Les Snell, (Arry number 1), & was on her from My 69 - July 71 when I left to join the RN at the ripeold age of 15.

Joined as a junior seaman, served 8 years, changed branches to Electrical in 70, & ended up as a CPOMEA(L) in 89.

I left in 96, worked in a power station until being let go at the end of April this year, so I am now unemployed at the age of 58.

If anyone wants to drop me a line, I would be happy to chew the fat.

Hello Martin Spiers. My name is Peter Frayne. my number was 112. I can remember both you and your brother. Like you I joined the Navy via HMS Ganges and left after just 7 years as a PTI. I to then went offshore as a diver, but not in SAT, just air range but specialised in underwater photography and spent time in Nigeria, Middle East, Spain, and a small time in the North Sea. I remember Coco very well,- he was one of the side drummers in the Are' band. We used to play all over Kent (I was the Drum Major - under Bob Morton). My number was 82, Mess was Top Port, and I was on the boat from 1960-63. I also remember Petra, LeMare stitched me up for 6 cuts because she used to wink at me. I joined the Merch and made it to No 3 Engineer with Cunard before the Mrs. pulled me out of the Navy altogether.

I was on the Arethusa for around 16 months,do remember the winter of 62/63,being informed of the assassination of President Kennedy,Stan the cook,the swimming pool,(still a rubbish swimmer)Mr Malone,Commander Le Mare and his daughter Petra,also the singing of a young black lad we all called Coco,(no political correctness!)he played a battered acoustic guitar and sang the hits of the day,From Me To You Beatles and Love Me Do. I left after around 16/18 months,having got homesick,but left home again in 1965 when I enlisted into the Army.I did visit the ship whilst undergoing my basic training,late 65/early 66,I was in uniform and there was a BBC News team on board at the time and I do recall being invited to stay for lunch and being filmed on my old mess,(starboard? Can't remember either mess no or my own no)

I was at Upnor on the River Medway the other day and, whilst reading the plaque by the restored Arethusa bowsprit, noted your existence. I wonder if you can help.
My uncle spent some time during his teens on the Arethusa, by recollection at Shotley in Suffolk (the name just rings a bell) and I wonder if, by any chance, you might have any record of him.
His name was David Geoffrey Coe, although he was always known as Geoff. He was born on 11.5.1918 and was raised in Tooting, South West London. He died after a stroke on 10.5.81, just before his 62nd birthday.
My recollection is that he was on the Arethusa during his mid teens – i.e. somewhere around 1933/34 give or take a year – and that he was one of the “button boys” which I understand to be one of those who stood upright on the very top of the main mast during one of the displays. I seem to recall that there may have been a photo but, if there was, it hasn’t trickled its way down to me, his only nephew.
If you have any record of him staying on Arethusa I’d be very grateful to receive it.
During the war Geoff was on the cruiser HMS Calcutta, evacuating British troops from Crete to Alexandria, when it was sunk within a few minutes by a Junkers 88 at 9.20am on 1/6/41. Their sister ship HMS Coventry managed to rescue 23 officers and 232 ratings and returned them to Alexandria 100 miles to the south. Many of the other seamen died in the attack. After that he joined HMS Unruly, a sub.

Hi Ted Farr , where in Denmark do you live , I was a Speedway rider for 3 years in the mid 70's and had to pack in after a serious injury but still had an interest in the sport . A pal I used to ride with from Sheffield organised the transport of the England Speedway teams bikes and equipment all over Europe and I did a few trips as truck driver , and mechanic at the meetings . Memories seem to fade so quickly,I can't even remember when I was "on board" must have been between 1969-1971,having a quick roll up in the stinky toilets in the wee small hours,I didn't smoke by the way, I think it was just a rebel thing.
I remember "Polly" from Twickenham I think, I remember having a fight with someone and getting a bit of a pasting, thankfully Polly rescued me.
I remember the swimming coach, I couldn't swim so he thought it would be a good idea to make me jump in backwards into the 6ft 6 end, I think there was maybe 2-3 gallons less water when I got out than when I jumped in,I still can't swim and gin tastes better than that pool water I know.
Can't say I really enjoyed my time,at the time,but looking back, oh how I wish I had paid more attention and continued into the Royal Navy. All I managed to do was abscond twice, once to Kent, got caught by British transport police, no tickets,and second time to Scotland, we gave ourselves up and I still swear to this day we ate pie and chips while we where asleep,locked up in separate cells with cast iron beds and no bed linen,shouting our heads off the next morning not knowing that we where below the courts and every one could hear us!!
So many memories, I just wish I could remember names and dates !! they tried to make my dad pay for my air fare from Scotland, dad's reply,"if you had been looking after him a little bit better the little sod would not have been able to run off,he made me suffer when I eventually got home.You know, looking back now I can see the huge disappointment in my dad's eyes that I never made a career of the navy, I'm so sorry dad.

Ahoy, Richard Hutchings. I remember you very well as a bugler on board, mate. I was 199 Palmer (QD.STB, 19 mess), along with "Gibbo", "Lew" Lewin, "Titch" Peterowski we were nursed into some form of order by Frank Shackleton and employed as ship's buglers. I left the Are and entered the Royal Marines as J/Bglr 2nd class. Shako's patience paid off in the end, as I was selected as solo Bugler for the '74 Royal Tournament. After 7 years in the 'Drums I changed over and passed the Commando Course to start a new career in the Rank & File. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Service and went to pension in '94. I have kept close contact with Mark Talbot, who also joined the RM's and we were each others best man (23 years apart I might add) when we each tied the knot. If you ever get bored please feel free to bang out a mailie and I'll be more than happy to answer.

Hello Paul 103 1965, I was on the Arethusa 1964-1967 my number was 111 mess 11 my nick name was Pedro given to me by Graham Butcher and Dolly Grey he had a younger brother on board at the same time. When I joined the ship Graham asked me if I was a snob I waited a few seconds before answering and then replied yes I am a snob,Graham then shouted out to the rest of the ships company listen chaps we have got a snob, There was a lot of laughter and cheers it made me feel good. I wonder Paul do you remember a Brian Glass he was also on the Arethusa at about the same time. We both got in to trouble for going out of bounds to Gillingham to get a tattoo done cost us us 5 shillings each 2 weeks pocket money.

Hello, I'm not sure you can help with info on the Arethusa. My uncle, Dr. Clarke H. Garnsey, did a block print of the two-masted schooner yacht the Arethusa back in the late 1930s or early 1940s which won an Honorable Mention. He was a member of the Daytona Beach, Florida Art League. He died a year ago and I just received this print. WhatI'm looking for is her history, when she was built and where and what happened to her. You may have seen Stan Whiteheads reply to your enquiry about your Dad by now and he had already mentioned your message during our A O B Forum on Sunday.It was then that he realised hhis error.During my time on board 1948/50 I worked as a galley boy on a regular basis during our maintenace class periods (about every 6 weeks) and got to know Stan quite well.He invited me out to see a Gillingham A F C club match and took me home to tea where I met your Mum.You may know that we had a mutiny on the ship and part of the complaint from the boys was the food and/or possibly the lack of it.A result was a shake up in the galley staff with the then head chef being encouraged to leave ( quite quickly) and your Dad was appointed in his place.As far as the boys on board were concerned it was a brilliant move with immediate improvements for Stan went on to show what could be done with great cooking skills, effort and imagination.The boys had a lot to thank him bringing about the changes and I'm very pleased to be able to highlight his achievements.

Your note is of interest to a lot of Old Are' boys! We/I remember Stan alright! He was never without a 'fag-end' in his mouth! We have some pictures somewhere which show him being presented to the Queen's husband - and proudly showing some food he had cooked for us boys down below. The Galley was on the foredeck and in the photo's you can see it clearly,looking rather like an afterthought dropped on the deck. During 1948 Sport's day our Big Bass Drummer had his mother visit for the day and she wanted a good photo of 'her boy' with his leopard skin on ! So 'we' - most of the Ship's company gathered in front of the pavilion and a professional photographer took some photo's . One of which shows Stan - still with a dog-end on his lip!! Ha ha... Hello, I have just seen an article in my local newspaper about the Arethusa being sold by the american company. This is sad news if she is going to be broken up. My father Stanley Whitnell was the cook on board for many years and I have great memories of heing piped aboard on visitors day . Also the boys used to go up on the masts and do gymnastic displays downstairs. My father was very proud indeed to have cooked for several dignatories when they visited. Mrs Brown used to work and serve dinner for the captain and his officers. As my dad worked there we were allowed to use the swimming pool ashore. I can remember in the early days that some of the boys were orphans from Dr Barnardos and had nowhere to go at Christmas and they used to stay with us at our home in Canadian Avenue. I would love to hear of anybody who remembers him.

I was a sea scout and in 1957 when the school arethusa was out we attended a jamboree that involved sea scouts from all over england and some from holland we used the ship for meals and a meeting place one of the greatest times I had in the scouts.

I was aboard the 'arry' 1951-53 Number 97, nickname 'Pinnochio' Joined the RN Nov 53 Corrunna in the med then Loch Killisprt in the Gulf went on to serve in Boats from 59 till I left after 36 years, then did 12 years as a Guide aboard The Victory in Pompey Dockyard.

I'm Willie Weightman's daughter, and I loved the Arethusa all my life. I grew up there and it made me the person I am just as much as any of the boys there. Sadly my father died in 1987, and I am still going through his many photos, drawings, cartoons and notebooks, as well as his published works. We arrived in 1947, when I was just 2 years old, and my father taught there until he retired.

Recall swimming pool being unheated and being told of President Kennedy"s assasination by the duty officer, think we were informed just before/during teatime. Captain was at the time Cmdr Le Mare,who lived on board with his wife and daughter Petra.Can"t recall my number or mess, but remember mess leading hand being Boranski,also having fisticuffs with lad by name of McKeon,and some lad falling off the 2nd platform of the mainmast,great days,hard discipline, but that is what we need again. Went on to serve not RN, but Army and RAF Police,did visit the ship whilst serving in army,around 1966,was a TV crew on board at time ended up on BBC news !

I acted in a film called 'Sunset' which was filmed by Stone Film Productions (local film company) during 1968-1970. It started with a group of schoolboys going on a cruise on a sailship, which happened to be the Arethusa. The film is in colour but out of snyc. It was filmed using 16mm (good for those times). I managed to get a copy on video and then had it copied to a dvd. If you would like a copy then let me know. All the best...Al

Hi.My name is Olav Sivertsen.I was on the Arethusa from 1959 to 1960.My number was 195 and was Senior CPO boy on completion of time on the Arrie.Joined Turnball Scott shipping company in 1960, joined Fleet Air Arm 1963 and served 22 years leaving as a CPO air Radio Mech.Would be nice to hear how any of my mates got on.Names that come to mind are,Bullymore,who went to King Teds,Richardson who became an Radio Officer and any other of you guys who were on the M.V SUNGATE 1960 to 1962.

i was in Arethusa in 1954 then went too ganges and was in the second class of marine engineering mechanics
Stayed in the nvy for 34 years left in 1990 as a CMEM(M)
a great life and am still working

I was on the Arethusa 1959 to 1961 number 210 QDPT, joined the RN 1961 retired 1995, I remember Bill Kemp, amonst others and of course the Wiz.

My father Gilbert Thomas Perring was on the Arethusa but I'm not sure when. He was born in 1907 and died in 1970. His father was killed in the 1st World War in 1917 and his mother remarried. I remember him telling me of him scrubbing the decks barefoot, climbing the rigging and also dancing the hornpipe. I found all the comments very interesting. Thanks. Janet Wiliams (nee Perring)

I joined TS Arethusa (Upnor) in 1946.We received one old penny per month, this was usually spent ashore on the first Saturday of the month (payday) queuing at a lady's house for four bread rolls. Shortly before I left the pay was raised to sixpence per month. From the 'Are' I went to HMS Ganges at Shotley where a 52 week course turned me into a boy signalman. My first real ship was HMS Tintagel Castle which I joined in 1948 at Londonderry (NI). Spent 7 active & 5 reserve in the Royal Navy reaching the dizzy heights of L/Signalman. The 'Are' was excellent for its sheer discipline which has stood me in good stead ever since.

My dad was on the Arethusa ship, he was born in 1942 so i'm not sure how old he was when he went there, he was in the shaftsbury homes and his name is Trevor Turke
