While I didn't make the checkerboard, I did help drink the beer to get the beer bottle caps.
Open the bottle without bending the cap, glue a washer under the cap, and you can buy felt circles the exact size to then glue to the washer.
The combined thickness of the material keeps the metal of the bottle cap off the wood.
