Mainly they use no-till for corn and soybeans. First, "Roundup" type herbicide is sprayed on to kill anything green and then they use a special planter that tills narrow strips where the seeds are planted. It saves big on fuel expenses, and runoff is greatly reduced, do to the old crop residue that is left in place. However, the planters cost more than a new BMW!
