My Father, Vernon Hoying, was a Marine during WWII and served with the 6th Marine Division, 22nd Marines, Company C. He fought on Okinawa and was wounded during the campaign. He returned to his group and finished the tour. One of only 4 out of his platoon of 64 to do so. After the Japenese surrender, he served 6 months in Singtao, China, before returning to the states. He said that when they passed under the Golden Gate Bridge, there wasn't a dry eye on the ship.
