Water from the reservoir rushes down these pipes and spins turbine blades. Each is ten meters in diameter (see the car in the lower left corner for perspective). The flow of water through just two of them is equal to the entire flow of Iguacu Falls. The dam contains 20 of these penstocks and turbines; 18 operate at any given time.
