I too am a decesdant from Thomas Powell my Gr Gr Grandfather Ammon Powell was born in Crum Elbow NY.....I plan tovist this heritage site this year....Thanks to all who contribute to its preservation.

Thank you for the wonderful photos. They are a real treasure. You have not just captured Bethpage Village, you captured another world that has passed from our grasp and melted away from our culture. And we are the less for this loss. Your wonderful photos are a vivid and timeless reminder of what once was ours.

Now that the complex has aged and the landscape has matured this really is a beautiful setting and village, however Nassau County is a terrible landlord and their mis-handling of the historic Coles House "restoration" is appalling, from it's dismantling in Glen Cove to partial reconstruction at Old Bethpage Village, to outright neglect and ultimate desruction when left incomplete and rotting away for years and years at Old Bethpage is unforgiveable. Beautiful photos though, but a disgraceful story of nassau County incompetence

Mikki, have you ever read a book called "Harking Back"? It's an old one about Thomas Powell's life and the Bethpage land purchase down through the centuries. Fascinating. I got it from my library, and I live on the other side of the county from the Restoration. I work at the Restoration, and commute to it 5 days a week.

Lovely to know that the memories of our ancestors and history of our country is being kept alive in so many original settlements. I go back to Thomas Powell, through his descendants, Moses, Obadiah, Frost and William Bishop Bound Powell. William B. B. Powell was my great-great-grandfather, born in 1819 in Stillwater, Saratoga Co., NY. His father Frost took his family and moved to Racine Co. WI ca 1845 and later William B. B. married and took his family to Iowa and settled there ca 1860. Would love to piece together the earliest generations and find out more about the parents and siblings of Thomas and how he came to have so much money in order to buy 15,000 acres of land from three Indian tribes for what became Old Bethpage. My thanks to all who work hard to make the restoration possible and keep up the village for future generations.

How lovely to find your quality pictures of an area that I can only hope to walk someday. Thomas Powell, the original landholder, was my ancestor and I feel the roots running very deep in this land am so grateful that it has been preserved as a heritage site for all to enjoy.

I love all of the photos. U have really captured the beauty of the village. i have been going here since i was a little girl. my family has a house there. the Bedell house. it has never been opened wich is a shame. i heard they're doing sometjing i just dont know what. i hope they open it as it should be.

Recently moved from Long Island to Florida and I had gone on the website for Old Bethpage and came accross your photos. They are truly breathtaking and bring back so many wonderful memories of when we would visit and partake of all the different holidays with our children. I am so looking forward to once again going for the candle light walk after Christmas to once again go back. Now I know when ever I feel the pang for Long Island I can go to your pictures,. Thank you for capturing the true beauty of it all.

These are among the best pictures that I have seen of an historic restoration. I am involved in historic preservation in Virginia and my mother's early days were spent in the Powell House when her family rented it out in the first part of the last century, so these pictures are very relevent to me.

Dear Mr. Robertson, These are fabulous photographs. Really beautiful. I retired from my job (on Long Island) in August 2007 and moved to Lancaster County, PA. Today I visited the Landis Valley Museum in Lancaster, which is also an open air museum like Old Bethpage restoration, which I used to visit often when I lived on Long Island. I felt today that there's no comparison between the Landis Valley village and the Old Bethpage restoration. Old Bethpage has much greater acreage, and is located "off the beaten track" in a very quiet rural setting. The buildings at Old Bethpage are spread far apart, as I would imagine they were in the 1800's, giving a calm and peaceful feeling walking through the village.
