Marble House was built between 1888 and 1892 for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt as summer home or as they called it, a "cottage". It was designed by the architect Richard Morris Hunt and was inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles. The Newport Preservation Society acquired it in 1963 and in 2006, it was designated a National Historic Landmark.
