Weminuche Wilderness, CO 2002

Colorado's Weminuche Wilderness is more than a half million acres in size---Colorado's largest. It contains the headwaters of the Rio Grande, Piedra, Los Pinos, Animas, and the San Juan rivers. Located in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. It is named after a band of Ute Indians who lived, hunted, and fished the area.

In 1975, Congress combined the San Juan and Upper Rio Grande primitive areas into the Wilderness area. With an average elevation of 10,000 ft., it is the highest wilderness area in the nation. More than 80 miles of the Continental Divide passes through the Weminuche Wilderness.

Three of Colorado's 54 Fourteeners are located in the Wilderness: Mt. Eolis (14,083 ft), Sunlight Peak (14,059 ft), and Windom Peak (14,082 ft). In addition, there are 81 high mountain lakes.

We've been to The Window twice. Second time we took our sons from the Creede side. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Wonderful memories. Want my ashes scattered at the Window.

Great Pictures guys,
I am planing a trip to the San Juan mountains in the spring, and due to great referals I have decided to take on the Weminuche trails. I am a beginer and was wondering where i can get ahold of the maps you have posted in the pictures. I would also appricate any outher tips and advice you have about the Weminuche trails

Nice work if you can get it. I enjoyed viewing your photos. Not as much as I would enjoy being there. Looks like great country.

As LumenLux in the PTE forum, I took your invite to look around here. Now as I learned a little of the Weminuche, I see it was even the Ute indians that were there. Here in Utah, I had unwittingly confined the Utes to this state and never related them to the beautiful locations that I have visited in Colorado.

Hi Al,

The Pyramid was a "guys thing". Linda did climb the window while "the guys" were doing the Pyramid, but since I had the digital camera, there are no digitals of Linda on the Window. We do have film photos of her on the Window.

Denny also mentioned that this was the beginning of the Ferry-Whitehead team, so it must be a real special place.

Great pictures...Why didn't Linda climb the Pyramid? The Weminuche is one of my favorite places to hike. The Jack-Town Packers visited this part of Colorado more than any other
place. This same exact area beginning at 30 mile CG was where I got Denny Whitehead started in backpacking in 1983.

Wow, I can not believe how beautiful the high country is. Granite Lake looks like the Keewanaw Peninsula geography (Michigan's UP). I particularly liked the pix from Pyramid, they are spectacular!! The flora at that altitude were great as well. Looks like a great trip, with great friends resulting in great fun!!
