These were a new rotor and pads before the trip. The shiny stuff is re-solidified molten brake pad. I think there was a fire in my rear wheel. The brakes got stuck on in the mud of the Dalton Highway. I cleared the problem, and they were fine until I got back on the Alaska Highway, where it evidently happened again but I didn't know it until I pulled over for gas and had no rear brakes.
