The most distinguishing feature of Burmese girls (especially among the Bamar ethnic majority people) is the yellow daubs of thanaka paste/powder which they apply on their cheeks, nose, and sometimes forehead, to protect against the sun. Thanaka is obtained by grinding the bark of the thanaka tree (a small tree grown in Upper Burma) into a paste, and is applied on the face to cool the skin, control oiliness, and act as an effective sun-block.
