Xinjiang is located in the hinterland of Eurasia. It is a vast and mysterious piece of land, across which the Silk Road once traversed, and to which the Creator seems to be partial. Gathered together in this one place are fantastic landscapes of lofty mountain ranges (Altay range in the north, Tianshan range in the middle, and Kunlun and Karakorum ranges in the south), glaciers, lakes, rivers, forests, prairies and deserts (which make up two-thirds of the total area of Xinjiang; the Taklimakan Desert alone is 336,700 square kilometres in size and is the second largest shifting-sand desert in the world next to the Ar-rub-Al-Khali Desert of Saudi Arabia).
