funnel (1985)

QE2

This and the next two shots compare QE2's original funnel (smokestack) with the one she sported after being converted to diesel propulsion in 1986.

Inexplicably, Cunard painted the original funnel white from 1969 to 1983, making QE2 the first and only Cunarder since 1848's Britannia to sail without the red-orange Cunard livery.

After the Falklands war, QE2 received a facelift that included painting the funnel in the traditional colors, and a striking light charcoal gray hull color. The light color proved difficult to maintain and QE2 reverted to the traditional black hull in 1984.

The Cunard Adventurer and Cunard Ambasador, in service with QE2 between 1971 and 1976, also sported white funnels.
